Parking a truck is a paperwork job

Most Sydney councils require a permit to stand a removal truck in a metered space, a resident zone or a clearway - the City of Sydney and the inner-west councils among them. Applications take days rather than hours, and some need the space physically coned off the night before. If a permit is not sorted, the alternative is a long carry down the street, which costs more time than the permit ever would. Tell us both addresses early and we will tell you which ones need one.

Terraces and the inner west

Newtown, Erskineville, Balmain, Surry Hills and Glebe are full of houses that were never designed for a wardrobe. Narrow hallways, tight staircase turns, no side access and a gate you cannot get a fridge through. A modern sofa often will not make the turn at the top of a Victorian stair, and the honest answer is sometimes that it goes in through a window or it does not go in at all. Measuring the doorway and the stair turn before the day is worth more than optimism on it.

High-rise lift bookings

Apartment buildings in the CBD, Green Square, Zetland, Chatswood and Parramatta almost all require a service lift booked in advance, often in a fixed window and frequently not on weekends. Building management may also want a certificate of currency from your remover before they will release the lift. Book the lift before you book anything else - the move gets planned around that window, not the other way around.

Crossing the harbour, and the timing of it

A move between the north shore and anywhere south of the water is a different job depending on the hour. The Harbour Bridge and Tunnel both toll southbound and both back up badly at peak. A truck sitting on the approach is a truck you are paying for. Where a crossing is involved we plan the load to leave outside the worst of it, which sometimes means an earlier start than you would choose.

Strata rules and move-in windows

Plenty of Sydney buildings restrict moves to weekday business hours, require protective padding in the lift, and charge a bond against damage to common property. Some will not allow a move on a Sunday at all. These rules come from the building, not from us, and they are worth reading before you settle on a date.

Do I need a parking permit for the truck?
Often, yes - it depends on the council and the street. Metered spaces, resident-only zones and clearways generally need one, and councils want notice. Send us both addresses when you enquire and we will tell you which end needs a permit and how long it takes to get.
My building requires a certificate of currency. Can you provide one?
Building managers commonly ask for this before releasing a service lift. Ask us for it as soon as you have booked, and check what your building specifically requires - some ask for a particular level of cover, or to be named on the certificate.
Will my furniture fit up a terrace staircase?
Sometimes not, and it is better to know beforehand. Measure the narrowest point of the stair turn and the doorway, and send us photos of anything you are unsure about. There are usually options - dismantling, a different entry, or occasionally a hoist - but they need planning, not improvising on the day.
Can you move on a weekend?
For houses, usually. For apartments it depends entirely on the building, since many restrict service lift use to weekday business hours. Check with your building manager before you commit to a date.
