Darwin removalists - the smarter way to move in Darwin

Local knowledge

Moving in Darwin.

The wet and the dry are two different jobs

Between roughly November and April the Top End gets heavy, sudden rain and very high humidity. A dry-season move and a wet-season move are not the same job: loading windows shrink, cartons need covering between the door and the truck, and an afternoon downpour can arrive with almost no warning. If your dates are flexible, the dry season is the easier run - and if they are not, say so early so the plan accounts for it.

Cyclone season needs a plan, not a hope

The Top End cyclone season overlaps the wet. It rarely stops a move outright, but it can close roads, delay freight south and change what is sensible to attempt on a given day. Booking with margin either side of your date is worth more here than anywhere else in the country. We will tell you honestly if a date looks tight rather than take the booking and hope.

Humidity is hard on cartons and electronics

Sustained humidity weakens cardboard, and anything sealed warm can hold moisture for weeks. Cartons that would be fine in Adelaide can soften here, and electronics, documents, photographs and musical instruments all need more thought than a standard pack. Tell us what is heat- or moisture-sensitive before we pack it, not when it comes off the truck.

Three thousand kilometres to the next capital

It is roughly 3,000km down the Stuart Highway from Darwin to Adelaide, and there is very little in between. Interstate work out of the Top End runs on consolidated freight and planned departures rather than on demand, and the delivery windows are longer than anywhere else we operate. Booking late does not cost you money so much as options.

Elevated tropical homes

A lot of Darwin housing is built up off the ground for airflow and flood clearance, which means external stairs, louvred walkways and sometimes a carport underneath doing the work of a garage. It is the same practical issue as a Queenslander: the carry is longer and the stairs are real. Tell us if either address is elevated and roughly how many steps.

Questions

Moving in Darwin, answered.

Should I avoid moving in the wet season?
If your dates are flexible, the dry season is the easier run - less rain to work around and more predictable loading windows. If they are not flexible, a wet-season move is perfectly workable; it just needs covered loading and a bit more margin in the plan. Tell us your dates and we will be straight about what they mean.
How long will an interstate move from Darwin take?
Longer than from anywhere else, because the distances are longer and the freight is consolidated. We give you an estimated delivery window when we quote and update it if it moves. Transit times are always estimates, never guarantees.
Will humidity damage my things in transit?
It is a genuine consideration here, particularly for electronics, paper, photographs and instruments. Flag anything sensitive before packing so it can be wrapped for moisture rather than just for knocks. Transit insurance is available, but the better answer is packing it properly in the first place.
Do you cover outside Darwin itself?
Yes. Our Darwin coverage takes in Darwin city, the Northern Suburbs, Palmerston, Howard Springs, Humpty Doo and Litchfield. Tell us the two addresses when you enquire and we will confirm rather than guess here.
