Local knowledge
There is no road to Tasmania. Household goods travel by sea, and that puts a fixed schedule in the middle of your move that nobody can hurry. Sailings have booking lead times, and around Christmas, Easter and school holidays they fill well in advance. The practical effect is simple: a Hobart move needs to be booked earlier than a mainland one, and the sailing is the date everything else is built around.
The crossing lands in Victoria, so a Hobart move to or from anywhere on the mainland is usually a Melbourne connection plus a road leg at the other end. That is not a problem, but it does mean more handovers than a single-truck run, and it is why an accurate inventory matters more here - a load that has to be re-worked at a port is a bad day for everyone.
Hobart runs up the side of a mountain. Streets in Battery Point, West Hobart, Sandy Bay and South Hobart are genuinely steep, often narrow, and frequently have the front door well above or below the road with a flight of steps in between. A truck may not be able to stop where you would like, and a long uphill carry is a real difference in time and crew. Tell us about the steps and the gradient before the day.
Hobart has some of the oldest housing stock in the country - sandstone cottages and Georgian terraces with narrow original doorways, tight stairs and, in listed properties, limits on what may be removed to get something through. Measure the front door and the tightest turn, and send photos of anything borderline. It is much better to know beforehand than to find out with a wardrobe halfway up a staircase.
Southern Tasmania gets weather off the Southern Ocean, and it changes fast in any season. Rain on a steep, wet path is the practical risk, not the temperature. Where a move involves a long outdoor carry we plan around the forecast rather than the calendar, and we will say so if a day looks poor.
